“for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery–but I am talking about Christ and the church. (Ephesians 5:31–32)
If the husband is a picture of Christ and the wife is a picture of the church and God joins them to be one, then Jesus Christ and His church are one as well. The church can’t separate itself from Jesus Christ.
The marriage relationship provides God with an opportunity to groom followers of Christ into being the followers He desires. He uses marriages to make us one with Jesus by making us one with our spouse. When we get married, we do become one in the eyes of God in terms of recognizing the covenant we just committed ourselves to, but we are no where close to reflecting the true image God desires at that moment. We enter into a life long journey with our spouse and God as we navigate the course our lives take. Through the situations that develop as we live, God will use them and our spouse to expose where our hearts are. The question becomes, “Where is each individual in the process?” Thankfully, God knows what each marriage and individual needs in order to help them deal with issues to become the person He desires. It’s a process to bring us to the end of ourselves, learning to pour ourselves out to serve others.
Ultimately, God desires that each follower of Christ come to a place of total devotion and surrender to become one with Him for reflecting the glory and true image of our Creator. This can only be achieved by staying connected with Jesus as we were instructed in John 15.
